| This small kennel began in Iowa in 1963 with the arrival of a puppy, Shaver’s Bonny Red Queen, followed shortly thereafter by a young female acquired from the Harmony Lane Kennels in Georgia. This show-pointed youngster, Killane Kate of Harmony Lane, when bred to the young special, Ch. Blayneywood Country Squire, produced Summit Rise Sendai Doll, the dam and grand-dam of a number of champions. During the sixties and seventies, having been mentored to a great extent by Anne Smith of Harmony Lane and Ted Eldredge of Tirvelda, Marilyn was very active in the breed, serving the Des Moines Kennel Club as a Board Member representing the Sporting Group, establishing the Hawkeye Irish Setter Club with several friends and writing monthly articles on Irish Setters in both Popular Dogs and Kennel Review, two popular show magazines of that time. Marilyn also judged at a number of All Breed matches and Sweepstakes classes at Irish Setter Specialty shows. Also during this time the Shaver’s young daughter, Laura, began, at the age of 8 ½ to show her own young dog, Summit Rise Forever Amber, garnering some very nice wins and 7 points before complications following her only litter ended the dog’s show career. In 1977 the Shaver’s relocated to the Pacific Northwest from Iowa, when their son entered Oregon State University. Subsequently they became less active with regard to showing, finishing only two dogs, the Group winning Ch. Summit Rise Rampart, co-owned with and shown by Carol Rentz of the Edenderry Kennel and his son, Ch. Summit Rise Banner O’Jaybrier. They were the son and grandson of one of the top winning bitches on the West Coast, Ch. Summit Rise Sonnet of Saraval, who was owned and shown by the Ramon’s in California, but who spent her remaining years back at Summit Rise. Another "Sonnet" son, Ch. Saraval Kerrick, was Best of Breed from the classes, at the first Irish Setter Club of Seattle Specialty Show. Some other Summit Rise champions include: Ch. Summit Riser of Harmony Lane, CD, Ch. Flicka of Summit Rise, Can. Ch. Summit Rise Cheyenne Autumn (a group winning dog in Canada), Ch. Summit Rise Sensation, Ch. Summit Rise Flare O’Legerwood, Ch. Legerwood’s Abergavenny Lad (a son of S.R. Flare and S.R. Sensation). Although few litters were actually bred by Summit Rise, several of the Summit Rise bitches were used as foundations in other kennels. The Shaver’s are now semi-retired but still own Irish Setters and maintain a strong interest in the breed. They are members of the Irish Setter Club of Seattle and the Irish Setter Club of America along with daughter Laura Root. Currently, the Shaver’s house pets consist of a bitch from Meadowlark bloodlines and a retired show champion male co-owned with Cindy Lloyd, Am. & Can. Ch. Donegan’s Dennis the Menace. "Cody" won his Canadian title by going Winner’s Dog at the 1997 Canadian National Show, Best of Winners at the 1997 British Columbia Specialty and a Group third at an all-breed show in 1998, all with Laura handling. Laura enjoys showing Irish Setters for friends and now has Irish of her own. After a long search, the young bitch, Pin Oak Velvet Touch, (Ch. Castlebar Country Statesman ex Ch. Pin Oak Vicksburg, JH) was acquired with the hope that she may become the new foundation bitch for Summit Rise.
